A Lasting Power of Attorney for Health and Welfare is a legal document that lets you choose someone you trust, your attorney, to make decisions about your medical care, daily routine and living arrangements if you’re ever unable to make those decisions for yourself.

Who a Health and Welfare LPA is right for
A Health and Welfare LPA is usually worth putting in place if you recognise your situation in one of the following:
- You want a genuine say in who makes decisions about your care and treatment if you’re ever unable to make them yourself, rather than leaving it to whoever happens to be involved at the time.
- You’re already arranging a Will, or a Property and Financial Affairs LPA, and want your health and welfare decisions covered at the same time.
- You or a family member has received a diagnosis that may affect your ability to make decisions in future, and you want to plan while you still have full capacity to do so.
- You want to name a particular person you trust, rather than leave decisions to be worked out between family members and medical professionals after the event.
A Health and Welfare LPA only covers decisions about your care and medical treatment; it has no bearing on your money or property. Most clients choose to put a Property and Financial Affairs LPA in place at the same time, and we explain the combined cost below.
What is included

- Clear, plain-English guidance through every decision, including who to appoint as your attorney, whether to give them authority over life-sustaining treatment, and how many attorneys to appoint.
- A bespoke Lasting Power of Attorney, prepared for your specific circumstances rather than generated from a template.
- A completed Lasting Power of Attorney delivered within 7 days of us receiving all the information we need from you, with registration at the Office of the Public Guardian handled on your behalf if you’d like us to take care of it.
How much does a Health and Welfare LPA cost
A single Lasting Power of Attorney, whether for Health and Welfare or for Property and Financial Affairs, costs £100. If the same person needs both, the combined cost is £150 rather than £200. Both prices are fixed, so there are no hidden costs once your consultation has taken place.
In addition to our fee, the Office of the Public Guardian charges its own registration fee of £92 per LPA. This is separate from our charges and is payable whether you register the LPA yourself or ask us to handle this for you.
