Do we both need to attend the same appointment?
Ideally yes, but it is not essential. Many couples prefer to attend together, since it is often quicker and easier to talk through shared decisions in one conversation, and you can both take advantage of the free home visit. If it suits you better to be seen separately, I can arrange that instead.

Who Mirror Wills are right for
Mirror Wills are usually the right choice if:
- you are a couple, whether married, in a civil partnership or living together, and want to plan your Wills together, most often leaving everything to each other and then to your children
- you want to choose the same executors, and the same guardians for your children, so your plans work together whichever of you dies first
- you have children from earlier relationships and want to decide together how each of your children will be provided for
Mirror Wills do not have to be identical. Some provisions may be the same and others quite different, because each Will is your own. In a blended family, for example, you might each leave your share to the other first, and then to your own children from an earlier relationship. The point to understand is that the survivor is free to change their Will after the first death. If you want to guarantee that your own children ultimately receive your share, that needs a trust in your Will. I will talk the options through with you before you commit to anything.

Who will write your Wills
Wise Owl Wills was founded by Stephen Rhodes, who was called to the Bar in 1999 and has 27 years of legal experience. Having drafted Wills and dealt with disputes arising from poorly prepared or unclear Wills, Stephen understands both how these important documents should be prepared and what can go wrong when someone’s wishes are not expressed properly. You deal directly with Stephen throughout, from your first conversation to the completion of your documents.
Mirror Wills: frequently asked questions
Are Mirror Wills the same as a joint Will?
No. A joint Will is a single document signed by two people. It is rarely used in England and Wales because it causes practical problems after the first death. Mirror Wills are two separate Wills, one for each of you, which simply reflect each other. Each Will stands on its own.
Can the survivor change their Will after the first death?
Yes. Once one of you has died, the survivor is free to make a new Will, and could leave everything to someone else entirely, for example a new partner. For most couples that flexibility is fine. If you want to make sure your share eventually reaches your own children, a trust in your Wills can protect it. I will explain the options at your consultation.
Do we have to be married to make Mirror Wills?
No. Unmarried couples can make Mirror Wills in exactly the same way. It matters even more if you are not married, because an unmarried partner has no automatic right to inherit anything without a Will, however long you have lived together.
Do our Wills have to be exactly the same?
No. Some provisions may be the same and others completely different. You might, for example, each leave personal gifts to different relatives, name different executors, or each leave your share to your own children after the survivor has died. What makes them Mirror Wills is that you plan them together, so they fit with each other.
What happens to our Mirror Wills if we separate?
Separating does not change your Wills, so you should review them straight away. A divorce or the dissolution of a civil partnership treats your former spouse or civil partner as though they had died, so any gift to them or appointment of them as executor falls away, but the rest of the Will still stands. Getting married, or entering a civil partnership, normally cancels an existing Will altogether.
