Living Wills (Advance Decisions to Refuse Treatment)
Record the medical treatment you would refuse, for a fixed £100, with free home visits across Greater Manchester.
A Living Will, properly known as an Advance Decision to Refuse Treatment, is a legal document that lets you record, in your own words, the medical treatments you want to refuse in future if you are ever unable to make or communicate that decision yourself. I prepare every Living Will personally, and I send your documents within 7 days of receiving everything I need from you.
No obligation. Your fee is agreed and fixed before you commit to anything.
How much does a Living Will cost?
Living Will
£100
Fixed fee. No registration fee to pay.
Included in the service: –
- A consultation at your home, by telephone or by video call, to talk through the treatments and circumstances that matter to you
- Plain-English guidance so your Living Will is drafted precisely enough to apply when it is relied upon, including the extra formalities the law requires if you are refusing life-sustaining treatment
- A Living Will prepared around your own wishes, not generated from a template
- Your documents ready within 7 days of my receiving everything I need from you.
Those who make a Living Will often wish to receive: -
- A Health & Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney, for £100*.
- Both a Health & Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney and a Property and Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney, for a combined fee of £150*.
*The Office of the Public Guardian may also charge a registration fee of £92 per LPA.
Unlike a Lasting Power of Attorney, a Living Will does not need to be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian or any other body, so there is no government fee. My fee is the only cost.

Stephen at Wise Owl Wills
We asked Stephen at Wise Owl Wills to prepare our mirror Wills and a letter of wishes. He listened carefully to what we wanted, explained our options clearly and helped us put our wishes into words. Stephen explained how the Wills would provide for each other and our family, and how the letter of wishes could offer additional guidance alongside them. We appreciated having time to ask questions and discuss the details. The personal service made the whole process straightforward and reassuring. We would recommend Wise Owl Wills to couples looking for professionally drafted Wills and thoughtful, practical guidance.

Me and my partner used Wise Owl Wills for our mirror Wills and a Lasting Power of Attorney. Stephen explained everything in a way that was easy to understand and never made us feel rushed or pressured. The price was agreed beforehand, so we knew exactly what we were paying. Everything was sorted quickly and professionally, and we now feel much happier knowing our affairs are in order. I would definitely recommend Wise Owl Wills to anyone in Denton or Greater Manchester.

Who a Living Will is right for
A Living Will is usually worth putting in place if:
- you have clear views about specific medical treatments you would refuse in future, and want to record that decision yourself rather than leaving it to someone else to judge on your behalf
- you have received a diagnosis, or are thinking ahead about a decline in your health, and want your wishes about particular treatments settled while you still have the capacity to decide
- you already have, or are considering, a Health and Welfare LPA, and want to fix your position on the specific treatments that matter most to you
- you would rather your own instructions were followed exactly on the treatments you feel strongly about, rather than have family or an attorney interpret what you would have wanted
A Living Will does not appoint anyone to decide on your behalf; it records your own refusal in advance. If you would also like someone you trust to make the wider range of care and welfare decisions, that is a separate document, a Health and Welfare LPA, and many clients choose to put both in place together.

Living Wills: frequently asked questions
Is a Living Will legally binding?
Yes, if it is valid and applies to the situation. Doctors must then follow it. That is why it needs to be drafted precisely: a vague Living Will may not apply when it matters.
Can a Living Will ask for a particular treatment?
No. A Living Will can only refuse treatment. It cannot require doctors to give you a treatment, and it cannot refuse basic care such as warmth, comfort or food and drink offered by mouth.
What if I want to refuse life-sustaining treatment?
You can, but the law sets extra requirements. The refusal must be in writing, signed and witnessed, and must include a clear statement that it applies even if your life is at risk. I make sure those requirements are met.
Should I have a Living Will or a Health and Welfare LPA?
They do different jobs, and many people have both. A Living Will records your own refusal of specific treatments. An LPA appoints someone to make wider decisions for you. The order matters: if you make a Health and Welfare LPA after your Living Will and give your attorney authority over the same treatment, the LPA takes priority. I will make sure the two documents work together.
Who needs to know about my Living Will?
It only works if it can be found when it is needed. Give a copy to your GP, and tell your family or anyone close to you where the original is kept.
Can I change my mind later?
Yes. You can change or withdraw your Living Will at any time while you have the capacity to do so.
