Living Wills - Advance Decisions to Refuse Treatment
A Living Will, properly known as an Advance Decision to Refuse Treatment, is a legal document that lets you record, in your own words, the medical treatments you want to refuse in future if you’re ever unable to make or communicate that decision yourself.

Who a Living Will is right for
A Living Will is usually worth putting in place if you recognise your situation in one of the following:
- You have clear views about specific medical treatments you would refuse in future, and want to record that decision yourself rather than leaving it to someone else to judge on your behalf.
- You’ve received a diagnosis, or are thinking ahead about a decline in your health, and want your wishes about particular treatments settled while you still have the capacity to decide.
- You already have, or are considering, a Health and Welfare LPA, and want to fix your position on the specific treatments that matter most to you, alongside the wider decision-making authority you’re giving your attorney.
- You’d rather your own instructions were followed exactly on the treatments you feel strongly about, rather than have family or an attorney interpret what you would have wanted.
A Living Will doesn’t appoint anyone to decide on your behalf, it records your own refusal in advance. If you’d also like someone you trust to make the wider range of care and welfare decisions, that’s a separate document, a Health and Welfare LPA, and many clients choose to put both in place together.

How much does a Living Will cost
A Living Will costs £100, fixed, with no hidden extras once your consultation has taken place.
Unlike a Lasting Power of Attorney, a Living Will doesn’t need to be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian or any other body, so there’s no separate government fee to pay. Our fee is the only cost involved.
